- Coast FIRE number by ageA table of targets from 20 to 60.
- Retire at 40 calculatorA retirement that starts at 40 can last 55 years, and the tax rules keep most retirement accounts closed for the first 19½ of them. The calculator starts at a 3.25% withdrawal rate for that reason.
- Retire at 45 calculatorIf you stop at 45, plan for your money to last 50 years. In Bengen's original research, withdrawal rates up to about 3.5% lasted that long in every period he tested, so the calculator starts at 3.5%.
- Retire at 50 calculatorRetiring at 50 means your money has to last 40 years or more, and most of it sits in accounts you can't touch freely until 59½. The calculator is set to a 3.5% withdrawal rate for that reason.
- Retire at 55 calculatorFor most people, 55 is the earliest age where the tax code meets you halfway. Leave your job in or after the year you turn 55 and that employer's 401(k) opens up without the 10% early withdrawal tax.
- Retire at 60 calculatorAt 60 the early withdrawal rules are behind you, and Social Security is two to seven years away. That makes it the retirement age where your benefit changes the number most.
